WILLIAM SOMNER, 1606-1669
Canterbury Cathedral Archives & Old Sessions House, Christ Church University, Longport, Canterbury, CT1 1PL
Saturday 23 March, 2019
This educational event on William Somner, who made a very significant contribution to 17th-century antiquarian scholarship, will take place on Saturday 23 March 2019, just one week before the exact anniversary of his death.
Participants will see an exhibition of Somner manuscripts and books in Canterbury Cathedral Archives before a programme of lectures at Old Sessions House.
In addition to Professors Jackie Eales and Kenneth Fincham, Drs Rachel Fletcher and David Shaw, with Avril Leach, will set Somner’s life into its seventeenth-century context and also examine his literary legacy. Any surplus over costs will be added to the Ian Coulson Memorial Postgraduate Award fund to help support CCCU postgraduates working on Kent history topics.
