The blog is designed to fit alongside our print publications, Local History News and the Local Historian, as well as our short presentations, the Ten-Minute Talks.

We will be publishing articles of around 750-1000 words. In addition to being published on the BALH website, your article will also be promoted through our social media channels and e-newsletter.

Guidelines for submitting a blog post: 

If you would like to submit a blog post, please follow these guidelines:

Choose your content and topic: 

Choose a topic relating to local history that interests you – this could be a location, well-known historic figures or groups, or an item/building. Equally, you can write about how historic collections/archival sources can be used to study and promote the study of local history. 

Your blog could also be a review of a BALH event/talk. 

Craft a headline: 

The title of your post should be both informative and capture the attention of your readers. 

Length:

You should aim to have 750-1000 words. 

Editing and Fact Checking: 

When conducting your research please make sure that all the facts you include are accurate. Before submitting your blog post, please proofread your piece and ensure that there are no spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. If you are using specific terminology or any complex ideas, make sure to explain these as the reader may not be familiar with the term or idea you are referring to. Blog posts should be concise and clear.

Ensure that there are no copyright issues: 

Please make sure that there are no copyright issues with any images that you use as part of your blog post. Using images is a great way to enhance your post but do please make sure that any images you use are copyright-free or that you own the copyright and have specific permission to use them in this way. If there are any individuals in these photos, ensure that you have their permission before submitting them.

If you use someone else’s work do please reference this work. You are welcome to include a short bibliography of texts that you have used/are key to the subject you are writing about. 

Submitting your blog post: 

You are welcome discuss your blog post with our Digital Team, then email your blog article, including any images.

Images should be of a useable size, typically a minimum 1000 pixels in width, and ideally landscape format. Larger images are welcome, and will be resized / cropped to fit our website style. Please send images as separate attachments, and not embedded in your blog document. If you would like images to be placed at specific points within the article, please highlight these positions accordingly within your text.
