The 2020 AGM was held virtually, on Saturday 12th September 2020.

It was introduced by the BALH President, Professor Caroline Barron.

What Is Local History?

Professor Catherine Clarke of the Centre for the History of People, Place and Community presented a fascinating talk to the BALH virtual AGM, held on 12th September 2020.

In the talk, originally scheduled for Local History Day in June of 2020, Professor Clark opens up a discussion on what is local history and offers her own views. There is a question and answer session at the end of the presentation.

The talk was introduced by Dr Jessica Lutkin, Chair of BALH in 2020.

Why BALH?

Where did your ancestors live?

It is impossible to trace the history of one’s family without considering where they lived. Local history societies and one-place study groups have researched and published content that will allow you to place the lives of your ancestors in the context of their local communities, villages, towns and cities as well as some of the key socio-economic factors that lay behind their development. They often use the same sources as family historians, and can help provide an alternative interpretation of a document or suggest new resources to help your research.

Meet the team

Heather Falvey, Reviews Editor for The Local Historian

Heather, Reviews Editor for The Local Historian, has been a BALH member since 1993, starting with a Certificate in Local History at Cambridge. A tutor in local and social history at Oxford and Cambridge, she has been involved in local history publishing for over 20 years as Secretary of the Hertfordshire Record Society. Her research focuses on early modern social unrest, with a PhD from Warwick and multiple publications. She has edited historical texts, including Baroness Elizabeth Dimsdale’s Receipt Book and Walter Morrell’s Manufacture for the New Draperie, and is currently editing the letters of Humphry Repton’s family.
