Folkestone & District Local History Society

Founded in 1985, the Folkestone History Society brings together people with an interest in the history of Folkestone and its surrounding area. Through talks, publications, research projects and community initiatives, the Society works to preserve, share and celebrate the rich heritage of this historic Kent town.

The Folkestone History Society was founded in 1985 when a small group of local collectors and history enthusiasts came together with the idea of creating a society dedicated to the town’s heritage. Since then, it has grown into a well-established local history organisation, providing a welcoming forum for anyone interested in exploring the history of Folkestone and the surrounding area.

The Society offers a year-round programme of illustrated talks covering a wide range of historical subjects, with a particular focus on Folkestone’s people, places and stories. Alongside its talks programme, members are encouraged to take part in local history research, exhibitions and community projects.

Over the years, the Society has played an active role in promoting local heritage through publications, exhibitions and public engagement. Its First World War centenary exhibition attracted more than 4,000 visitors and received national media coverage. Current initiatives include the creation of a photographic record of every shop and business in Folkestone and Cheriton, helping to preserve an important visual record of the area’s changing streetscape.

The Society also maintains an extensive website featuring local history articles, image galleries, research resources, newsletters and publications. Through its growing online presence and active Facebook community, it continues to share historic photographs, uncover local stories and encourage residents to contribute their knowledge and memories.

Meeting Details

The Society meets on the first Wednesday of each month at Holy Trinity Church Hall, Sandgate Road, Folkestone, CT20 2HQ. Meetings begin at 8.00pm (doors open from 7.30pm) and feature a programme of illustrated talks on local and regional history.

Visitors are welcome. Annual membership costs £15 per person, while non-members may attend meetings for £3.
