During the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries the custom of Festive Charity became a core aspect to the celebration of Christmas in England with emphasised importance. This talk will be exploring charitable acts across the county of Hampshire that provided relief to the poor during the Christmas period, with examples from local workhouses and orphanages.

Speaker: Sophie Curtis is a graduate from the University of Winchester with a BA and MA in History, where she chose to specialise in the social and cultural history of the Victorians with a special interest in Christmas Studies. She is Hampshire born and raised and has always been fascinated with local history.
