Langport and District History Society

The aim of the Langport & District History Society is to research and promote the rich heritage of Langport and its surrounding areas.

The small town of Langport, in the heart of the Somerset Levels, was home to Walter Bagehot, the renowned Victorian constitutional and financial writer; the scene of a major Civil War battle; the home of the famous Kelways nursery, and where a local banking company once had a banknote circulation second only to the Bank of England.

We organise a programme of talks and visits.  We have a collection of digital images, many of which we have published on our website, https://langportheritage.org.uk.  We publish an annual compilation of articles of local historical interest, called Level Talk, and mount occasional exhibitions.  We have erected interpretation boards about local history in the local area, and have plans for more.

Anyone who is interested in the history of the Langport area is welcome to join.  Members get free entry to our talks, and receive an e-newsletter keeping them up to date with Society news.
