200 Magazine #5 October 1822 / 2022
The deciphering of the Rosetta Stone, now a treasure of the British Museum, was the big news in this edition of 200.
October’s issue reported the return to Britain of the surviving members of Capt. John Franklin’s disastrous expedition to the Arctic. (Two decades later he would lead the ill-fated HMS Erebus and HMS Terror mission.)
In the North-East of England, soldiers guarded key locations around the River Tyne at the start of a second strike by coal industry keelmen (transport workers) in just four years. This month’s 200 also ran news from Bath, Brecon, Brighton, Canterbury, Liverpool, London, Portsmouth, Somerset, and Ireland’s southern counties.
