A response from the Trustees of the British Association for Local History to the Ministry of Justice consultation on the ‘Storage and retention of original will documents’.
Published: 21st February 2024
The British Association for Local History (BALH) is the national charity which promotes local history and serves local historians. BALH has been named as an organisation whose views are sought on this issue. Our interest in this consultation relates to the importance of wills as historical documents, their centrality to understanding people, communities, social networks, material culture and place and place making in the past, and the importance and relevance of history and the original sources which underpin it to ordinary people across this country and around the world.
