Local History News

Local History News is published in January, April, July and October. It is a magazine with topical articles of interest to local historians, plus reports from local societies, record offices, museums and libraries. Developments in local history education reported in Local History News can be found on the Education page of this website.

Contributions are invited from all parts of the local history community. Information about local initiatives is particularly welcome and we are always keen to publish material that gives news of best practice, illustrating the diversity and vitality of local history. Supporting your academic research

There is an increasing interest in local history as a key element of academic studies – not just the content that has been published by local historians over the decades as a key research resource, but also in co-produced projects. Grant-awarding bodies such as the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) have placed an increasing emphasis on collaborations and partnerships when considering the award of research funding, and BALH provides the perfect platform for academic researchers to locate key groups and ongoing activity.

Meet the team

Nigel Tringham Publishing Committee

Nigel Tringham

Nigel, a member of BALH since 1999, represents the Victoria County History, where he has worked on Staffordshire’s history since 1979. He joined the Publishing Committee, later becoming its chair in 2005. A medieval and local history lecturer at Keele University, he also leads the Latin and Palaeography Summer School. He edits the Staffordshire Archaeological and Historical Society Transactions and Staffordshire Record Society volumes while supporting the county Archive Service. His research includes medieval records of York Minster’s lesser clergy, with further volumes planned for retirement. He played a key role in BALH’s Living the Poor Life project.
